Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How Often Should Data Centers Be Cleaned?
A: Data center cleanliness is imperative. As dust and debris collects on equipment, the probability of equipment failure increases, leaving customer data at risk.
Data centers must schedule their certified cleaning on an annual basis. However, certain factors may require the data center to be cleaned more frequently. It is recommended that data centers schedule certified cleaning on a quarterly basis, with regular equipment and hardware cleaning every three months.
Q: How Should Data Center Cleanliness Be Maintained?

A: Data center cleanliness is maintained by reviewing equipment manuals, documenting maintenance plans and procedures, conducting tests and inspections, performing simple cleaning tasks, and inspecting security features of the facility.

Q: How Should a Data Center Be Cleaned?
A: Data center cleaning consists of moping or vacuuming to pick up unwanted particles on the floor and subfloor. Mops should be designated to the data center to avoid the introduction of outside contaminants. Any vacuums used during the cleaning process require a HEPA filtering system. It is important to avoid sweeping, as this will create airborne particles that travel through unwanted cracks and crevices. Racks, cabinets and other similar structures are wiped with a damp, clean, disposable cloth. All cleaning chemicals used during the cleaning process should be designated and approved for use in a data center.
